How to Choose a Perfume That Suits You

Fragrance families, skin, season and occasion: a simple way to find a scent you will enjoy wearing.

Choosing a perfume is personal, and a few simple ideas make it much easier.

Start with the fragrance family. Fresh and citrus scents feel light and clean, floral scents are soft and romantic, woody and amber scents are warm and deep, and oriental scents are rich and spicy. Think about which of these you already enjoy in other products, such as candles, soaps or flowers.

Think about the occasion and the season. Light, fresh perfumes are popular for daytime, work and hot weather. Deeper, warmer perfumes are often chosen for evenings, special occasions and cooler weather.

Read the notes. Most perfumes describe top notes, which you smell first, heart notes, which appear after a few minutes, and base notes, which remain for hours. A perfume can smell different at each stage.

Test on skin and give it time. The same perfume can smell slightly different on every person, so apply a little on your skin and wait about half an hour before deciding.

Do not test too many at once. After three or four scents your nose gets tired, so take a break and smell something neutral, or come back another day.

If you cannot try a scent in person, ask us before you order. Tell us what you like and we will gladly help you choose.
